Clarification of the Current Tint Law in California

There have been many questions concerning the status of the current tint laws for vehicles in California. A summary of the current law follows:

Front Side Windows  --  A clear, colorless, transparent film may be applied to the front side windows provided it meets the following requirements:
1. The film must have a minimum visible light transmittance (VLT) of 88 percent;
2. The window glazing with the material applied, must meet the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, including the specified minimum light transmittance of 70 percent and applicable abrasion resistance;

3. The material must be designed and manufactured to enhance the ability of the existing window glass to block the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays;
4. The driver has in his or her possession, or within the vehicle, a certificate signed
by the installing company certifying that the windows with the film installed meet the requirements of this section and identifies the installing company and the film manufacturer by full name and street address.

Rear Side Windows  --  Exempt - VLT not restricted

Rear Glass  --  Exempt - VLT not restricted provided the vehicle is equipped with the right and left rearview mirrors.

History  --  For several years, the window film industry attempted to obtain legislative approval to allow 35 or 50 percent film on the front side lites.  Law enforcement was firmly opposed to this initiative. Eventually, after numerous discussions, law enforcement agreed to allow the clear film.

I have recently discussed the current law with the highway patrol. They are supportive of the current law, but are opposed to further changes at this time. I will continue to monitor this situation.
